Recently, I have seen a few questions about the dreaded info-dump. Writers can be stumped by this large obstacle, and with this post I hope to help people. ^_^ Here are my suggestions:
>> Spread out the information. Don’t tell the backstory of every single character in the first chapter. When you put jam on a cracker, do you just leave one big lump in the middle? No! You spread it out evenly. Think of your chapters in the same way.
>> Add action. Sometimes, when I find myself on the verge of an info dump, I put in a fast paced scene. Actions speak louder than words, and you can express tension or have a dialogue peppered throughout the fight to explain things.
>> Pick and choose what you want. Realistically, you cannot fit every detail about your world/plot/characters into a single book. Pick the best information to share with the reader to keep the story moving along.
