Editing Tips

work-stations-plus-espressoI recently did a survey on how people edit their stories, and came up with this list:

>> Take a few weeks’ break from your book before editing

>> Print out the entire book and edit the “old fashioned way” with a red pen

>> Color code and highlight strong plot lines/character arcs and fish out subplots that may have been discarded during the writing process

>> Get beta readers and keep track of the book’s comments

>> Study books similar to yours and use them as a guideline

>> Stay away from trite words and phrases such as “fast as lightning”

>> Read it out loud

>> Make sure you are tidy and efficient

>> Hire an editor for final revisions
